Less Quality Time
My love language is quality time, so this one is huge! There’s a difference between being together, as in being in the same location but not fully engaged with one another, and really spending time with one another. Spending time together watching the stories and learning about the lives of characters on the T.V. show we’re watching is not nearly as important or worthwhile as getting to know about one another more. Why would we use so much precious time observing the make-believe stories of others when we could be out creating our own awesome story together!? Would the story your living “wow” others watching it every night? Together, go out and do!
Similar to the opportunity there is to spend greater quality time with one another rather than watching T.V. is the opportunity to grow in your relationship with one another by using that time to learn how to communicate even better. Communication can be hard; We learned that especially when we dated long distance when the only thing to do was talk! But by taking the easier route of avoidance, you lose out on the opportunity to grow in this area in both your relationship and faith.
What we watch on T.V. has the ability to do harm
It’s no secret that much of what is on television goes against how Jesus told us to live. Every single one of us struggles with sins differently and a lot of what we see on T.V. paves roads to even greater struggles in overcoming sin and temptation. It’s like bait waiting to catch us and to see us stumble or fall. One example is a person who struggles with lust. Sex is all over television and being continually exposed to it will most likely make us struggle even more. Same with physical appearance, jealousy, discontentment, and so many others. Friends, when those scenes come on, if it’s not going be be turned off then turn your heads away, close your eyes, leave the room, whatever you have to do to avoid it. It’s not worth it.
"The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!" Matthew 6:22-23
